Ecotourism

The Corbett Foundation became interested in eco-tourism, the new buzz word in tourism, because it’s a tool with a great potential for both conservation and development. Even the definition of the word radiated a conservational approach hard to ignore. The International Eco-tourism Society defines eco-tourism as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well being of local people.”

workshop organised by the Corbett Foundation
An ecotourism orientation workshop organised by the Corbett Foundation in July-August 2001.

In August 2001, the Corbett Foundation launched its Eco-tourism Wing. This Wing was started to promote the ethics of eco-tourism and to monitor tourism activity in the Corbett area. This involves spreading awareness about “what an eco-tourist really is?” among the tourists and Forest Officials and “what is eco-tourism?” among the nature guides and various agencies working in the local service industry.

The Foundation also offers consultancy for structuring interpretation facilities and assist implementation of eco-tourism. Already we have developed an extensive array of similar facilities for the Infinity Resorts and the Dhikuli Centre of the Foundation.

The Foundation is also equipped to conduct orientation workshops for tourism establishments and related organisations. In fact the Eco-tourism Wing was launched with an orientation workshop on eco-tourism, organised for the personnel of the Foundation and Infinity Resorts. The three-day workshop was held at the conference hall of Infinity Resorts from July 30th 2001 to August 1st, 2001 with a primary objective of increasing awareness of the basic concepts and issues related to eco-tourism and conservation.

The subjects that the Foundation covers in such workshops range from biodiversity to threats to wildlife and environment. The role of Protected Areas to ecology and conservation matters are also important aspects of eco-tourism.

The Foundation has also supported students both from India and abroad to study various aspects of tourism and its positive and negative impacts on the Corbett Tiger Reserve.
