Construction of roads in and adjoining to the forest areas poses a fresh threat to the conservation of wild animals. Roads have both direct and indirect negative impact on the conservation of flora and fauna in the wilderness, destroying habitat and blocking the movement of animals form one area to another. Many animals die in accidents with speeding vehicles. The Ramnagar-Ranikhet road adjoining to the eastern boundary of Corbett Tiger Reserve is a major threat. Wild animal injuries and deaths from speeding vehicles is a very common phenomenon. A tiger was injured in a road accident near Ringora village in Bijrani range of Corbett Tiger on 23rd December, 2007. On 1st February, an adult female chital was killed due to a road accident in Aamdanda beat of Bijrani range near Dhikuli village whereas another chital died on the same beat near Ladua village on 15th February.
In a different incident, a carcass of a female leopard was found on Bajpur-Nayagaon road in the Bannakhera range of Terai West forest division. According to forest department the leopard might have been killed due to an accident with a vehicle. |
